The events of Tuesday night in faraway Krusevac, where the England under 21 went to take on their Serbian counterparts in the U-21 Euro 2013 qualifier left a sour taste in my mouth.
Once again I saw vile racial abuse, once again UEFA's mantra of going tough on racism fell flat.During the warm up leading to the game,Danny Rose reported monkey chants directed at him to an official but the said official told him to get on with the game that it will be dealt with after the game. How in God's holy name will a UEFA official tell a player to endure racial abuse for 90 full minutes or more.To me that is anything but going tough. How about refusing to start the game until the mindless chants stop.
UEFA has been paying lip service to stoping racism, they must think racism can be curbed by dishing out paltry fines to offenders. How will these senseless fans stop racial abuse when all it will cost their FA is 20 grand.
How about banishing them to neutral venues for a minimum of two years & then capping it with a hefty fine. How about banning offenders from all footballing activities for one full year or more.If bold steps like these are taken, fans will realize they have a lot to lose if they make racist chants & the FA's too will begin to ensure that their fans remain well behaved on match days.
